Underground mine personnel management system with UWB TOF technology for 0.2–1.0 m positioning accuracy. Supports 50,000 tags, trajectory tracking, SOS alarms, and geofencing.
The Mine Personnel Management System is an underground precision positioning platform that employs third-generation UWB time-of-flight (TOF) technology, GIS geographic information systems, and GUI graphical interfaces to reflect real-time personnel and locomotive dynamics across all underground zones to the surface control center, enabling managers to track personnel distribution and movement trajectories for efficient dispatch and safety management.
Knowing the precise location of every person underground is the cornerstone of mine safety management. The Mine Personnel Management System — also referred to as the Underground Personnel Precision Positioning System — leverages third-generation UWB time-of-flight technology to achieve positioning accuracy of 0.2 to 1.0 meters, a dramatic improvement over legacy RFID-based systems that could only determine presence within tens of meters.
The system architecture is built on an industrial Ethernet backbone with positioning stations deployed at approximately 300-meter intervals along underground corridors. Each positioning station communicates with personnel-identification tags carried by miners, relaying real-time location data to a surface control center running a B/S-architecture software platform backed by a MySQL database. This design allows authorized personnel to access the system from any web browser without installing dedicated client software.
Beyond real-time positioning, the system provides comprehensive trajectory tracking with historical playback, allowing managers to reconstruct any worker's movement path by time, person, or other criteria. Safety-critical features include SOS alarm capability through which personnel can actively transmit distress signals via their positioning tags, and emergency evacuation commands that the monitoring center can broadcast to specific zones or all underground personnel. Electronic geofencing allows administrators to define danger zones and restricted areas, with automatic alerts triggered by unauthorized entry, overtime loitering, or zone violation.
The system automatically records shaft entry and exit times for attendance purposes, with statistics categorized by job type and shift team. With a maximum capacity of 50,000 identification tags, the platform scales to support even the largest mining operations. The combination of precision positioning, trajectory analysis, geofencing, emergency communication, and attendance management makes this system an indispensable tool for mine production scheduling, safety compliance, and emergency response planning.
